Upcoming Panel Discussion about last October's Blizzard

The Black Hills AMS, in conjunction with the SDSM&T weather club will be hosting a panel discussion next Tuesday (April 8th, 2014) about last October's blizzard here in western South Dakota. The panel discussion will run from 6-8 PM and is going to be held in room 204 (east and west) in the Classroom Building on the School of Mines Campus.

Panelists include representatives from the National Weather Service, Pennington County Emergency Management, KOTA TV, the SD stockgrowers association, the SD Veterinarian's office, and Black Hills Power.  We will also be hosting a silent auction on items donated from local businesses, with proceeds going to the Rancher Relief Fund. Additional details are on the flier included below

Fall 2013 meeting: November 13, 2013 at 6 PM at SDSM&T

We will be having our next meeting on Wednesday November 13, 2013 at 6:00 PM. We're going to try out a different venue this time and hold the meeting on the SDSM&T campus in room 222 of the Mineral Industries building.  We'll plan on ordering some pizza and providing some drinks since the meeting will be around dinnertime.

Our speaker for this meeting will be TSgt Will Price of the US Air Force at Ellsworth AFB and he'll speaking to us about weather operations at Ellsworth AFB.

Fall Picnic 9/14/2013

The Black Hills AMS will be hosting  picnic in conjunction with the SDSM&T Weather Club this Saturday, 9/14, at the Steamboat Rock Picnic Area off Nemo Road.

We'll be getting the grill fired up around noon and plan on having hot dogs and hamburgers along with some chips and drinks.  All are welcome, please RSVP to blackhillsams@gmail.com by Thursday, 9/12 if you'll be attending so we can get a rough estimate on how much food to bring.

Next meeting and photo/video contest April 25th

Our next meeting is going to be Thursday 4/25 at 6 PM at the Pizza Ranch here in Rapid City (in the meeting room as usual).  We'll be having our annual photo/video contest along with elections for officers for next year.  We have reserved the room starting at 6PM and we'll plan on starting the meeting around 6:30 so there will be some time to catch up over dinner before the meeting starts.

Rules for the photo/video contest:
-You may submit up to 10 photos and/or (approximately) 1 minute of video.
-Submissions should be made via email to blackhillsams@gmail.com. I'll send you a response once I receive your pictures or video.
-The deadline for submissions is going to be 4/24 at 5 PM, so I have time to organize all the submissions.
-You must be a Black Hills AMS member to enter the contest.

First, second, and third place winners in each category (photo and video) will receive certificates and the first place winners will also win an additional prize!

Next meeting: November 15, 2012

The fall meeting of the Black Hills Chapter of the American Meteorological Society will be held at noon on Thursday, November 15 in the "cow pokes" room at Pizza Ranch here in Rapid City.  Tom Warner, a PhD student at the School of Mines,  will be presenting a talk entitled "Upward Lightning Triggering Study:
First Year Observations" discussing the first year of the UPLIGHTS field study that is taking place here in Rapid City.  Tom will start speaking around 12:20, so feel free to come around noon to have some pizza and catch up before the talk starts.

The Black Hills AMS held its annual photo/video contest back at our last meeting back in April.

AMS meeting April 24th-photo video contest & elections!​!!

We will be having our next AMS meeting on the evening of Tuesday, April 24th at Sam & Louie's Pizza which is at 2101 Mt. Rushmore Rd. We will be in the back meeting room, and they will be setting up a buffet for us with pizza, salads, and breadsticks. The cost will be $7.99 (plus tax & tip) and this includes a soda. We will start the buffet at around 600 pm, and start the meeting at 6:30 pm.
We will be having our annual photo/video contest, along with having elections for new officers (president, vice-president, treasurer, & secretary). Also, if you have not paid your dues yet and wish to become a member you may do so at the meeting ($3 students/$5 everyone else). As for the photo/video contest, we will try to keep it simple this year. Here are the "rules"...
- You may submit up to 10 photos and/or up to one minute of video (can be a bit longer if need be)
- E-mail the photos/videos to me at blackhillsams@gmail.com
-I will send you a response as soon as I receive your submission, so if you do not hear from me within a day or two, it means I may not have received it.
-Deadline for submission is noon on Monday, April 23rd.
-Must be a Black Hills AMS member (or planning to become a member) to enter.
We will provide a certificate for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place. Also, a snappy prize will be provided for 1st place in all categories. Please try to send your photos/videos in as soon as you can!
