Next meeting and photo/video contest April 25th

Our next meeting is going to be Thursday 4/25 at 6 PM at the Pizza Ranch here in Rapid City (in the meeting room as usual).  We'll be having our annual photo/video contest along with elections for officers for next year.  We have reserved the room starting at 6PM and we'll plan on starting the meeting around 6:30 so there will be some time to catch up over dinner before the meeting starts.

Rules for the photo/video contest:

-You may submit up to 10 photos and/or (approximately) 1 minute of video.

-Submissions should be made via email to blackhillsams@gmail.com. I'll send you a response once I receive your pictures or video.

-The deadline for submissions is going to be 4/24 at 5 PM, so I have time to organize all the submissions.

-You must be a Black Hills AMS member to enter the contest.

First, second, and third place winners in each category (photo and video) will receive certificates and the first place winners will also win an additional prize!

Next meeting: November 15, 2012

The fall meeting of the Black Hills Chapter of the American Meteorological Society will be held at noon on Thursday, November 15 in the "cow pokes" room at Pizza Ranch here in Rapid City.  Tom Warner, a PhD student at the School of Mines,  will be presenting a talk entitled "Upward Lightning Triggering Study:

First Year Observations" discussing the first year of the UPLIGHTS field study that is taking place here in Rapid City.  Tom will start speaking around 12:20, so feel free to come around noon to have some pizza and catch up before the talk starts.

The Black Hills AMS held its annual photo/video contest back at our last meeting back in April.

AMS meeting April 24th-photo video contest & elections!​!!

We will be having our next AMS meeting on the evening of Tuesday, April 24th at Sam & Louie's Pizza which is at 2101 Mt. Rushmore Rd. We will be in the back meeting room, and they will be setting up a buffet for us with pizza, salads, and breadsticks. The cost will be $7.99 (plus tax & tip) and this includes a soda. We will start the buffet at around 600 pm, and start the meeting at 6:30 pm.

We will be having our annual photo/video contest, along with having elections for new officers (president, vice-president, treasurer, & secretary). Also, if you have not paid your dues yet and wish to become a member you may do so at the meeting ($3 students/$5 everyone else). As for the photo/video contest, we will try to keep it simple this year. Here are the "rules"...

- You may submit up to 10 photos and/or up to one minute of video (can be a bit longer if need be)

- E-mail the photos/videos to me at blackhillsams@gmail.com

-I will send you a response as soon as I receive your submission, so if you do not hear from me within a day or two, it means I may not have received it.

-Deadline for submission is noon on Monday, April 23rd.

-Must be a Black Hills AMS member (or planning to become a member) to enter.

We will provide a certificate for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place. Also, a snappy prize will be provided for 1st place in all categories. Please try to send your photos/videos in as soon as you can!

Black Hills Tornadoes: Science & Survival

A public safety presentation entitled "Black Hills Tornadoes: Science & Survival" will be given on Friday, April 20th at 700 pm in the SDSM&T Classroom Building, Room 204. The presenters will be Susan Sanders & Matt Bunkers from the National Weather Service, both of whom are also Black Hills AMS members. Patrick Ealy (SDSM&T Weather Association President & BHAMS Treasurer) has done a great job coordinating this presentation and getting it setting this up. You never know, you might even win the weather radio that Black Hills AMS sponsored!

AMS Meeting on Thursday, March 1st at Pizza Ranch!!

Our next AMS meeting will be on Thursday, March 1st, in the "Cowpokes Room" at the Pizza Ranch in Rapid City. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Adam French from the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences at SDSM&T. Adam will give a talk entitled "Observations of Mergers between Squall Lines and Isolated Supercell Thunderstorms", which is also the title of his paper that was recently accepted to Weather and Forecasting.

We will start the meeting with Adam speaking at 1220 pm. Feel free to come early and visit, I will arrive around noon. If you will be a little late due to classes or other engagements, do not worry. There is a back door so you can sneak in and out to refill your plate!
